    Sound in Dahn Yoga

    Sound TreeDahn Yoga, like other forms of yoga, sometimes uses sound. Like meridian stretching, joint rotation, and vibration exercise, sound can help get your energy flowing properly in your body.

    Different sounds have different effects. As I’ve mentioned before in this blog, the “Ah” sound helps relax the chest and open the fourth chakra.

    Sometimes specific words are repeated that have a healing effect. One example is the Korean phrase noe-kyung, which means “brain scripture”, or in other words, “the truth embedded in the brain”. Another is Brain Wave Vibration, or noe-pa-jin-dong in Korean.

    Like a muscle-based exercise, when making any sound it’s important to focus on your body. As you feel different parts of your body and vocalize, you can help heal and move energy through that part of the body.

    Your voice actually changes with the part of your body you are focusing on. For example, focusing on your dahn-jon in your lower abdomen creates a deeper sound than when you are focusing on your chest, even when you are saying the same word or note. In this case it may seem obvious that when you are focusing on your lower abdomen, your breath and your energy come from there, which is deeper in your body than your chest. When you breathe from your chest your breath is much more shallow. However, if you focus on other parts of your body, such as your limbs, your voice will also change accordingly.

    Like so many other things, even though we use sound all of the time in our every day life, when we are mindful in what we are doing and have a healing intent, something ordinary can become poignant and powerful.
