A Healing Sign - Myung-Hyun
By Michela | June 19, 2008
I extracted this explanation of myung-hyun from the latest Dahn Yoga New Member Orientation packet. It describes many of the physical symptoms practitioners may experience as they expel stagnant energy from their body. I thought this was a good description of the phenomenon, which many people without experience can misunderstand. An important difference between myung-hyun and something negative happening in your body is that although you experience these symptoms, overall and especially afterwards you feel so much better than you ever have, especially on a deeper level (notice the graph below).
When you become more sensitive to the energy flow in you body and become more educated through your Dahn Yoga practice, then you can experience myung-hyun not just from a physical but also an energetic and spiritual perspective. You can feel the energy leaving your body as you feel the physical sensations and watch the thoughts and emotions associated with them that you are also releasing. As your awareness of yourself grows you can determine for yourself if what you are experiencing is myung-hyun (before that you may need a little help from someone more experienced, such as an instructor). You can also use that awareness to understand what is happening inside of you, allowing you to make better choices about how to act to attain any goal you set. Myung-hyun is a great tool for learning compassion and acceptance as well as deeper understanding.
The best way to manage the symptoms is to keep doing your Dahn Yoga training so that you keep the energy flowing in and through your body. In stronger cases, however, a healing session with a Dahn Yoga Healer/Instructor or acupuncturist (or some healer who understands energy) may be prudent.
As you continue your Dahn Yoga practice, stagnant energy begins to release from your body. Numerous sensations - called Myung-hyun - may also appear. Myung-hyun literally translates as “brightness” (myung) and “darkness” (hyun). Although Myung-hyun may sometimes feel uncomfortable, its presence indicates that your body is restoring itself.
Below are some of the typical symptoms.
-Deep fatigue or tiredness
-Flu-like symptoms
-Soreness
-Marks on the skin (bruises or rashes)
-Shaking or vibration in some area of the body
-Increased pain in old injury areas
-Mood swings
-Itchiness
These are signs that your body is healing and are natural responses of the body ridding itself of stagnant energy.
If you should have any questions, please consult with your instructors. We will be happy to meet with you.
